A New Chapter in West Bengal's Healthcare Journey
After a significant hiatus, West Bengal is set to formally rejoin the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), with the scheme's benefits expected to commence from July 2026, specifically July 1, 2026. This development follows an announcement by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, made after a virtual meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on May 23, 2026. The state had initially launched the scheme on September 23, 2018, but subsequently withdrew on January 10, 2019, opting to focus on its own state-run health coverage model, Swasthya Sathi. The decision to re-embrace Ayushman Bharat is a pivotal moment, aiming to integrate West Bengal's healthcare services with national standards and extend vital health coverage to a broader population. This move signifies a renewed commitment to enhancing public health access across the state. West Bengal Reembraces Ayushman Bharat: A New Dawn for Healthcare Access.
Unlocking Comprehensive Healthcare Benefits
The Ayushman Bharat scheme is renowned for providing substantial financial protection against catastrophic health expenditures. Under AB-PMJAY, eligible families in West Bengal will receive cashless hospitalization coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year. This comprehensive package covers a wide array of medical services, including medical examination, treatment, and consultation. Patients can avail benefits for intensive and non-intensive care services, essential medicines and medical consumables, and diagnostic and laboratory investigations. Furthermore, the scheme addresses complications that may arise during treatment, accommodation benefits, and medical implantation services. It also includes food for the patient, pre-hospitalization charges for up to three days, and post-hospitalization follow-up care for up to fifteen days, ensuring a holistic approach to patient welfare.
A Boon for Senior Citizens: Universal Coverage
A significant highlight of the re-implemented Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal is the expanded eligibility for senior citizens. Under the updated national guidelines, all Indian citizens aged 70 years and above are now eligible for up to ₹5 lakh in annual cashless health insurance coverage, irrespective of their income level or existing private insurance policies. This universal coverage for the elderly will be provided through a distinct Ayushman Vay Vandana Card, offering a dedicated health cover per family annually. This ensures that the most vulnerable segment of the population has access to critical secondary and tertiary care hospitalization, covering diagnostic tests, ICU and non-ICU treatment, surgeries, implants, and more. This expansion truly makes health security a universal right for India's eldest generation. Seamless Transition for Swasthya Sathi Beneficiaries
One of the primary objectives of this rollout is to integrate the approximately six crore beneficiaries currently covered under the state's Swasthya Sathi scheme into Ayushman Bharat. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has confirmed that existing beneficiaries under Swasthya Sathi will be incorporated into the national scheme. This move aims to expand benefits beyond state borders, allowing residents to access healthcare services across the country. Additionally, those who are not yet covered under the state government's scheme will also be given the opportunity for fresh registration under Ayushman Bharat. The state government has indicated that it may continue to operate its existing Swasthya Sathi scheme alongside Ayushman Bharat, ensuring broader healthcare support and a smooth transition without disrupting ongoing treatment services.
Strengthening West Bengal's Health Infrastructure
The re-implementation of Ayushman Bharat is part of a broader healthcare revamp in West Bengal. The Centre has sanctioned approximately ₹3,000 crore for the state's healthcare sector for the current fiscal year, with ₹500 crore already transferred. A significant portion of this, ₹976 crore, has been allocated specifically for the Ayushman Bharat scheme, while ₹2,103 crore is designated under the National Health Mission. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Arogya Mandir is expected to be signed in June 2026 in New Delhi.
Beyond insurance coverage, the state is actively pursuing several other health interventions. A campaign to make West Bengal TB-free is slated to begin, aligning with national efforts. There is also a proposal to establish 469 Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the state, which will offer essential medicines at significantly discounted rates, potentially reducing out-of-pocket costs by 70-80 percent. A cervical cancer vaccination program is scheduled to be launched on May 30, 2026, from Bidhannagar Hospital in Kolkata, with over seven lakh vaccine doses planned for adolescent girls in the first phase. The state is also focusing on improving child health outcomes in seven districts with high mortality rates among children below five years. Furthermore, proposals are being sent to the Centre for establishing medical colleges in four districts (Alipurduar, Kalimpong, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Asansol) and an AIIMS in North Bengal. Recruitment of doctors, nurses, and other health personnel is expected to be completed within the next three months to enhance healthcare delivery, with a target to increase health coverage from 53% to at least 98%.
The Promise of Portability and Wider Access
One of the most powerful features of the Ayushman Bharat scheme is its portability. Beneficiaries from West Bengal will be able to avail cashless treatment at any empanelled hospital across India, regardless of their home state. This is particularly beneficial for the state's significant migrant workforce, allowing them to access healthcare services even while working in other parts of the country. This feature eliminates geographical barriers to quality healthcare, ensuring that financial assistance is available wherever it is needed within the national network.
Looking Ahead: A Healthier West Bengal
The launch of the Ayushman Bharat scheme in West Bengal from July 2026 marks a crucial step towards achieving universal health coverage and strengthening the state's healthcare ecosystem. With comprehensive benefits, expanded eligibility for senior citizens, and a focus on infrastructure development, the initiative promises to bring significant relief and better health outcomes for millions. This collaborative effort between the state and central governments is set to transform healthcare accessibility, reduce financial burdens, and pave the way for a healthier, more secure future for the people of West Bengal.
