Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: India's Leap Towards a Unified Digital Healthcare Ecosystem
Quick Navigation
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is rapidly transforming India's healthcare landscape, spearheading a digital revolution that promises accessible, efficient, and inclusive health services for all citizens. This ambitious initiative has achieved remarkable milestones, with over 93.95 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) created and 5.33 lakh health facilities registered nationwide, building a robust digital backbone for the country's health infrastructure.
Introduction to Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission
Launched on September 27, 2021, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission aims to establish the necessary digital infrastructure to integrate India's diverse health ecosystem. Its core objective is to bridge existing gaps among various healthcare stakeholders through digital pathways, fostering an integrated, citizen-centric approach to healthcare. The mission envisions a national digital health ecosystem that supports universal health coverage in a manner that is efficient, accessible, inclusive, affordable, timely, and secure.
By leveraging information technology and associated technologies, ABDM seeks to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency of health services. This digital framework empowers individuals with choices to access both public and private healthcare and provides healthcare professionals with improved access to patient medical histories, leading to enhanced care delivery.
The Power of ABHA: Over 93.95 Crore Accounts
At the heart of ABDM is the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), a unique 14-digit digital health identifier for every citizen. This ABHA number acts as a crucial gateway, enabling individuals to securely link, access, and share their health records with their consent across the ABDM network. The creation of over 93.95 crore ABHA accounts underscores the widespread adoption and growing participation of citizens in this digital health revolution.
The ABHA system facilitates the creation of longitudinal health records, ensuring that a patient’s medical history is available to healthcare providers, facilities, and digital health applications as needed. This seamless portability of health records is transforming patient experiences, allowing citizens to carry their medical history digitally across various ABDM-enabled facilities, thus reducing paperwork and administrative delays. As a testament to this, over 105 crore health records have been successfully linked to ABHA accounts, marking a significant stride in India's journey towards a connected digital public health ecosystem. A notable innovation, the 'Scan and Share' service, launched in 2022 under ABDM, has significantly streamlined outpatient department (OPD) registration. Patients can now scan a QR code at participating health facilities to generate a digital queue token, with their demographic details securely retrieved from their ABHA and integrated into the hospital's Health Management Information System (HMIS). This service has dramatically reduced patient waiting times from approximately one hour to a mere 2 to 5 minutes. As of June 18, 2026, over 23.21 crore ABHA-linked digital tokens have been issued across healthcare facilities nationwide.
Strengthening the Backbone: 5.33 Lakh Health Facilities Registered
Beyond individual accounts, ABDM is also meticulously building a comprehensive registry of healthcare providers. The Health Facility Registry (HFR) is a national repository encompassing 5.33 lakh public and private health facilities, including hospitals, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, and pharmacies. This registry is vital for creating a unified network where patients can easily discover registered facilities through the ABHA app and where their health records can be automatically linked with their consent during visits. Similarly, the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) has registered 9.85 lakh healthcare professionals, further integrating the workforce into the digital health network.
To encourage wider adoption and integration, the government introduced the Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS). This scheme provides financial incentives to healthcare providers and digital solution companies for digitizing health records and actively integrating with the ABDM ecosystem. As of June 18, 2026, hospitals have received over INR 107 crore, while diagnostic centers, laboratories, and pharmacies have been disbursed more than INR 2.95 crore. Digital solution companies have also received incentives exceeding INR 26 crore for their role in enabling interoperable digital health services.
Connecting the Digital Health Ecosystem
ABDM's vision extends to creating a fully integrated ecosystem that connects all stakeholders. This includes key components like the Unified Health Interface (UHI), an open network for health services designed to facilitate appointment booking, teleconsultations, and service discovery across various applications. Additionally, the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) is simplifying health insurance processes by connecting hospitals, insurers, patients, and regulators digitally, speeding up claim processing and reducing administrative burdens.
The revamped Aarogya Setu 2.0 application also plays a pivotal role as a citizen-facing platform under ABDM. This comprehensive digital health application allows users to create ABHA accounts, manage personal health records, book teleconsultations, schedule in-person appointments, access insurance information, discover nearby healthcare facilities, and even monitor health through wearable device integration.
Impact and Future Outlook
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is fundamentally transforming healthcare delivery in India. By reducing paperwork, shortening hospital waiting times, and enabling nationwide portability of medical records, it is making healthcare more accessible and efficient for millions. The mission also generates anonymized health data, which is invaluable for disease surveillance, healthcare planning, and the development of AI-based healthcare solutions, thereby improving public health trends and designing more targeted health programs.
With 2.72 lakh healthcare facilities already adopting ABDM-enabled software and 24 crore Scan & Register tokens generated, the mission's reach and impact are undeniable. India is steadily progressing towards universal health coverage, where quality healthcare services are accessible to everyone without financial hardship. ABDM serves as a critical pillar in this journey, strengthening the health sector and contributing significantly to the vision of Viksit Bharat. The continued expansion of ABDM, including schemes like the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY which now expands comprehensive healthcare for all seniors 70+, exemplifies the holistic approach to healthcare transformation in the nation.
