India's healthcare landscape is undergoing a monumental transformation as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) proudly announces the creation of over 90 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs) across the nation. This landmark achievement, driven by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, signifies a major stride towards establishing a connected, interoperable, and citizen-centric digital health ecosystem in India.

The Journey to 90 Crore ABHA Accounts

The journey of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has been marked by consistent growth and widespread adoption since its launch. The cumulative creation of ABHA accounts has seen a remarkable increase year-on-year, growing from 14.7 crore in 2021 to 30.4 crore in 2022, then to 50.6 crore in 2023, and reaching 72.2 crore in 2024. By 2025, the figure stood at 84.5 crore before proudly crossing the 90 crore milestone in 2026.

This impressive growth reflects the increasing participation of citizens, states, union territories, and various ecosystem partners in the mission. Uttar Pradesh leads the nation with over 15.3 crore ABHAs, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra with 7.1 crore each. Bihar has also made significant contributions with 6.3 crore accounts, and West Bengal with 5.9 crore ABHAs. Other states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Karnataka have also contributed significantly to this nationwide adoption of digital health services.

Notably, Union Territories such as Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have achieved full saturation of ABHA accounts. An encouraging aspect of this milestone is the significant participation of women, who constitute nearly half (49.75%) of all ABHA holders. This indicates a powerful step towards empowering women, especially in rural areas, with secure digital access to their health records, supporting continuity of care including maternal and child healthcare and immunisation.

What are ABHA Accounts?

An Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) is a unique, 14-digit digital health identity for every Indian citizen. It serves as a foundational component of the ABDM, enabling individuals to securely link, access, and share their health records with consent across various healthcare providers, facilities, and digital health applications.

The Vision Behind ABDM

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA), was launched to establish a robust and interoperable digital health ecosystem across India. Its core objective is to bridge existing gaps among diverse stakeholders in the healthcare sector, moving towards universal health coverage that is efficient, accessible, inclusive, affordable, timely, and safe. The mission aims to create a seamless digital framework that empowers citizens with greater control over their health information.

Impact and Benefits of ABHA Accounts

The widespread adoption of ABHA accounts is transforming India's healthcare delivery system, moving it from a fragmented, provider-centric model to a patient-centric, data-driven, and accessible one. Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO, National Health Authority, emphasized that the creation of over 90 crore ABHAs reflects the growing participation and is an important step towards empowering citizens with secure, consent-based access to their health information.

Empowering Patients

For citizens, ABHA accounts significantly reduce the need to carry physical medical documents by facilitating the digital linking of health records generated across different healthcare facilities and applications. This empowers individuals to securely share their health information with healthcare providers whenever required, solely with their consent, thereby improving continuity of care and enhancing transparency, efficiency, and convenience in healthcare delivery. Patients gain secure access to their personal health records, including prescriptions, diagnostic reports, and discharge summaries, enabling informed decision-making and better engagement with healthcare providers.

Streamlining Healthcare Providers

For healthcare professionals, ABHA provides better access to a patient's medical history (with informed consent), enabling them to prescribe more appropriate and effective health interventions. This integrated ecosystem fosters better continuity of care and aims to digitize the claims process, facilitating faster reimbursement and enhancing the overall ease of providing services for healthcare providers. The mission components, such as the Health Facility Registry (HFR) and Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), also create verified databases of healthcare facilities and professionals, ensuring a more organized system.

This transformation is evident in initiatives across the nation. For instance, in Delhi, significant progress has been made in healthcare transformation. Through the broader Ayushman Bharat framework, over 7.72 lakh Ayushman Bharat Health Cards have been issued, and 46,963 treatments have been provided. Delhi's Healthcare Transformation: Over 7.72 Lakh Ayushman Bharat Health Cards Issued, 46,963 Treatments Provided. The impact extends to financial support, with ₹86.22 crore in claims settled in Delhi alone, highlighting the mission's tangible benefits. Ayushman Bharat's Impact in Delhi: Over 7.72 Lakh Cards Issued, ₹86.22 Crore Claims Settled.

A Unified Digital Ecosystem

ABDM is building an integrated digital health infrastructure, comprising several key components beyond ABHA. These include the Health Facility Registry (HFR), a digital registry of healthcare facilities; the Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), a verified database of healthcare providers; the Consent Manager, which enables patient-controlled, consent-based data sharing; and the Unified Health Interface (UHI), an open network for booking appointments, teleconsultations, and service delivery. This holistic approach ensures a seamless exchange of health information, contributing to a more transparent and efficient healthcare system.

Key Drivers of Success

Collaborative Efforts

The achievement of 90 crore ABHA accounts has been fueled by active collaboration among the Central Government, State Governments, various healthcare providers, and private-sector ecosystem partners. ABDM-enabled health-tech platforms, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, insurers, and digital health applications have played a crucial role in expanding ABHA creation through multiple channels, making digital health services more accessible nationwide.

Technological Backbone

The mission leverages open, interoperable, and standards-based digital technologies to deliver a variety of data, information, and infrastructure services while ensuring the security, privacy, and confidentiality of personal health information. This robust technological backbone is critical for the seamless exchange of health records and for driving innovations in healthcare delivery. The integration of telehealth solutions also contributes to affordability and accessibility, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Digital Healthcare in India

As the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission transitions from its foundational phase to a scale-up and maturity phase, the focus shifts to deeper integration, advanced digital services, improved data utilization, and stronger governance. The government has extended ABDM's operational timeline through 2030 with increased funding of up to INR 2000 crore, signifying a long-term commitment to strengthening the digital health infrastructure.

The future roadmap includes the development of longitudinal personal health records, allowing individuals to access and control their entire health history over time and across providers. There are plans for deeper integration with digital platforms that will support an expansion of digital health services, including the use of advanced analytics and Artificial Intelligence for insights into health outcomes. Enhanced security, consent, and privacy frameworks will continue to be a priority, alongside the integration of claims processing and insurance. This forward-looking approach positions India to be a global leader in digital public health infrastructure by 2030, offering population-scale healthcare that is efficient, data-driven, and equitable.
