The coverage under ESIC specifically has more than doubled in the last decade, now reaching 15 crore people from 7 crore.

This initiative is a direct outcome of the transformative reforms introduced through India's new Labour Codes, which consolidate 29 central labour laws into four comprehensive pillars. Specifically, the Code on Social Security, 2020, is the legal bedrock for this scheme. This Code significantly expands social security coverage, extending benefits to previously underserved segments of the workforce, including unorganized, gig, and platform workers. The reforms also establish a Social Security Fund and broaden the scope of ESIC benefits, signaling a proactive approach to worker welfare in a rapidly evolving economy.
Beyond health check-ups, these Labour Codes have brought about other significant changes, such as ensuring equal wages for men and women workers and increasing maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. Speaking of financial stability, the Central Government also recently announced a 6% Dearness Allowance Hike for 2026, further demonstrating a commitment to supporting employees.
