PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana: A Deep Dive into Its Transformative Progress and Impact
Quick Navigation
Discover the significant progress of the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PM-DDKY) as it revitalizes India's agricultural sector. Launched in October 2025, this scheme focuses on 100 low-performing districts, aiming to boost productivity, improve infrastructure, and enhance farmers' access to credit through a converged approach.
Introduction to PM-DDKY
India’s agricultural sector, a cornerstone of its economy and rural livelihoods, has long grappled with challenges such as low productivity, inadequate irrigation, limited access to credit, and insufficient post-harvest infrastructure. To address these deep-rooted issues, the Union Cabinet approved the “Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana” (PM-DDKY) in July 2025, formally launching it on October 11, 2025. This ambitious six-year initiative, running from 2025-26 to 2030-31, is designed to accelerate agricultural development in 100 specific districts across the nation. These identified districts were selected based on critical indicators such as low agricultural productivity, low cropping intensity, and limited disbursement of agricultural credit. Drawing inspiration from NITI Aayog's successful Aspirational District Programme, PM-DDKY stands as a pioneering scheme exclusively dedicated to transforming the agriculture and allied sectors in these regions. The scheme is expected to benefit approximately 1.7 crore farmers by fostering a more resilient and sustainable agricultural ecosystem.
Recent Review Highlights
On September 1, 2026, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, conducted a comprehensive review of the PM-DDKY's progress in New Delhi. The review underscored the scheme’s positive momentum, particularly in accelerating implementation within the 100 identified districts. A key highlight from the meeting was the significant improvement in the average performance score of these districts across the scheme's six core objectives. This score notably rose from 22.54 in April 2026 to an impressive 38.85 in July 2026, marking an improvement of 16.31 points. This progress demonstrates the effectiveness of the scheme's interventions and the strengthened convergence among various participating initiatives. The review emphasized a continued focus on measuring actual outcomes and ensuring that the benefits of the scheme genuinely reach the farmers.
Six Pillars of Progress
The PM-DDKY is meticulously structured around six key objectives, each designed to holistically uplift the agricultural landscape of the target districts. These pillars aim to create a robust and self-reliant agricultural economy, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Boosting Agricultural Productivity
A primary goal of PM-DDKY is to enhance agricultural productivity, ensuring higher yields and better returns for farmers. This involves the adoption of modern farming techniques, access to quality inputs, and targeted interventions to improve soil health and crop management. The recent review indicated an increase in the average score for agricultural productivity from 2.53 in April to 6.70 in July.
Promoting Crop Diversification and Sustainable Agricultural Practices
The scheme actively encourages farmers to diversify their crops and embrace sustainable agricultural practices. This not only reduces reliance on a single crop but also promotes ecological balance and long-term soil fertility. Progress in this area saw the average score improve from 5.60 to 8.65 between April and July.
Enhancing Post-Harvest Storage Capacity
Post-harvest losses are a significant challenge for Indian farmers. PM-DDKY focuses on augmenting post-harvest storage capacity at the panchayat and block levels to minimize wastage and enable farmers to get better market prices for their produce. The scheme's efforts resulted in an increase in the average score for post-harvest storage capacity from 2.61 to 3.82.
Improving Irrigation Infrastructure
Assured irrigation is vital for agricultural stability and growth. The Yojana aims to improve irrigation infrastructure, promoting efficient water use through modern technologies like drip and sprinkler systems, a core component of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). This focus is crucial for increasing crop productivity, especially in water-scarce regions. The average score for irrigation infrastructure improved from 1.65 to 4.20.
Facilitating Greater Access to Agricultural Credit
Access to timely and affordable credit is essential for farmers to manage expenses, purchase inputs, and invest in their farms. PM-DDKY works to enable greater access to both short-term and long-term agricultural credit, often through schemes like the Kisan Credit Card (KCC). This pillar showed significant improvement, with the average score for access to agricultural credit rising from 2.81 to 5.59.
Strengthening Governance and Service Delivery
Effective governance and efficient service delivery are paramount for the successful implementation of any scheme. PM-DDKY places a strong emphasis on improving these aspects to ensure that the benefits reach the intended beneficiaries without hindrances. The average score for governance and service delivery increased from 7.94 to 10.33.
Convergence and Monitoring Framework
A unique aspect of PM-DDKY is its implementation through the convergence of 36 existing central schemes, managed by 11 different Ministries and Departments. This multi-pronged approach also integrates various state schemes and encourages participation from the private sector. To meticulously track progress, a total of 121 indicators have been identified, comprising 74 output indicators and 47 outcome indicators. The scheme's progress is continuously monitored through a dedicated PM-DDKY dashboard, which was activated in the last week of October 2025, with monthly output-indicator rankings commencing from November 2025. A Financial Progress Module was implemented on August 31, 2026, and a Beneficiary Progress Module is targeted for implementation by mid-September 2026. This robust monitoring framework, supported by NITI Aayog's review and guidance, ensures that interventions translate into measurable outcomes and tangible benefits for farmers, moving beyond mere activity and expenditure tracking. Extensive capacity building and training programs for farmers and extension workers are also a crucial part of PM-DDKY.
The Road Ahead: A Vision for Farmer Prosperity
As the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana approaches the completion of its first year in October 2026, plans are underway to comprehensively highlight the scheme's progress and the performance of the 100 Dhan-Dhaanya districts. The strengthened dashboard, with its upcoming Beneficiary Progress Module, will enable a systematic capture of beneficiary-level progress, providing a detailed assessment of resources deployed, activities undertaken, farmers benefited, and outcomes achieved. The scheme is poised to bring about higher productivity, enhanced value addition in agriculture and allied sectors, and local livelihood creation. By fostering self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in agriculture, PM-DDKY is set to not only improve the indicators within these 100 districts but also contribute significantly to the upward trajectory of national agricultural growth. The government continues to emphasize that without developed agriculture, the dream of a developed India cannot be fully realized, making schemes like PM-DDKY pivotal for the nation's future.
