Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a slew of impactful agricultural schemes and digital platforms in West Bengal, promising to revolutionize farming practices, enhance farmer income, and bolster rural infrastructure. This move is set to empower millions of farmers across the state, ensuring more transparent services, better market access, and sustainable agricultural growth.

PM-KISAN: A Lifeline for Farmers

On June 20, 2026, from Tarakeswar in West Bengal's Hooghly district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 23rd instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. This crucial disbursement saw over ₹18,880 crore transferred directly into the bank accounts of more than 9.44 crore farmers across the country. Specifically in West Bengal, over 45.35 lakh farmers are set to receive more than ₹907 crore under this latest instalment. Since its inception in February 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme has disbursed a cumulative amount exceeding ₹4.46 lakh crore nationwide, providing vital income support to small and marginal farmers. The day of this release was celebrated nationwide as 'PM-KISAN Utsav Diwas', with over one crore farmers participating in the main event via video conferencing.

Enhanced Crop Insurance with PMFBY/RWBCIS

In a significant step towards safeguarding farmers from agricultural risks, the Prime Minister also launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) in West Bengal. These schemes, with a combined cost of approximately ₹12,200 crore, aim to provide comprehensive crop insurance security. For the financial year 2026-27, the target is to extend crop insurance coverage to approximately 1.10 crore farmers across 30 lakh hectares of agricultural land in West Bengal. This initiative is expected to protect crops worth an estimated ₹28,140 crore. The central and state governments will jointly provide substantial premium subsidies to ensure these schemes remain affordable for farmers, thereby strengthening their income stability and risk management capabilities.

AgriStack: The Digital Backbone of Agriculture

Under the ambitious Digital Agriculture Mission, PM Modi launched AgriStack in West Bengal. This integrated digital platform is designed to revolutionize agricultural service delivery by providing farmers with easier access to a range of verified services. These include streamlined fertiliser distribution, efficient Kisan Credit Card services, direct benefit transfers, and transparent government procurement based on Minimum Support Price (MSP). West Bengal, which was previously the only state yet to fully integrate with this national initiative, is now poised to benefit from its digital transformation. AgriStack aims to provide timely information, transparent services, and enhanced market opportunities, creating unique digital identities for farmers and digitizing land records to enable more targeted scheme delivery.

National Mission on Natural Farming

Emphasizing sustainable and chemical-free agricultural practices, the Prime Minister also launched the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) in West Bengal. This mission promotes traditional Indian farming methods, focusing on reducing input costs, improving soil health, and enhancing climate resilience. According to the approved Annual Action Plan for 2026-27, West Bengal will establish 346 natural farming clusters across 17,300 hectares. These clusters are expected to benefit 43,250 farmers, providing them with bio-based inputs, comprehensive training, and improved access to markets. The initiative will also involve the creation of Bio-Input Resource Centres and the mobilization of 'Krishi Sakhis' to encourage widespread adoption of eco-friendly farming practices.

Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana

The implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY) was also initiated in West Bengal, specifically targeting Purulia, Darjeeling, Alipurduar, and Jhargram districts. Launched in October 2025, this scheme focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity in regions characterized by low productivity, limited cropping intensity, and restricted access to institutional credit. The objectives of PMDDKY include boosting overall agricultural productivity, encouraging crop diversification, and strengthening crucial post-harvest infrastructure such as storage and processing facilities. Furthermore, the scheme aims to ensure the integrated implementation of various rural development initiatives, thereby creating new employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for farmers and rural youth.

A Vision for a 'Viksit West Bengal'

These comprehensive agricultural initiatives are part of the central government's broader resolve to achieve 'Viksit Bharat, Viksit West Bengal'. The Prime Minister's visit and the launch of these schemes underscore a commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure, empowering farmers, and promoting inclusive development across the state. By integrating technology through platforms like AgriStack and fostering sustainable practices via the National Mission on Natural Farming, the government aims to transform West Bengal's agricultural landscape. The combined impact of these schemes is expected to significantly enhance livelihoods, create new economic opportunities, and drive sustainable growth for millions of farmers in West Bengal.
