Introduction

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme has received a significant five-year extension, backed by an impressive outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore, ensuring continued financial support for millions of Indian farmers. This crucial decision by the Union Cabinet is set to bolster agricultural productivity, reduce dependence on informal credit, and strengthen the rural economy across the nation. The extension, approved by the Union Cabinet on Friday, July 31, 2026, underscores the government's unwavering commitment to the welfare and prosperity of its farming community.

What is PM-KISAN?

The PM-KISAN scheme, a central sector initiative fully funded by the Government of India, was officially launched in February 2019, with its operational commencement dating back to December 1, 2018. It aims to provide vital income support to all eligible landholding farmer families across the country. Under this scheme, each eligible farmer family receives financial assistance of ₹6,000 annually. This amount is disbursed in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each, transferred directly into their Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is responsible for implementing this pivotal scheme.

The Extension: Details and Outlay

In a landmark move, the Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the PM-KISAN scheme for another five years, covering the financial years 2026-27 to 2030-31. This extension comes with a substantial financial outlay of ₹3,15,614 crore, reaffirming the government's long-term vision for farmer welfare. Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the Cabinet's decision, highlighting its importance for millions of farmers who will continue to receive crucial financial aid. This extension represents a pivotal step towards sustained agricultural growth and farmer empowerment, ushering in a new era of farmer support with a ₹3.15 lakh crore outlay.

Key Achievements and Impact

Since its inception, the PM-KISAN scheme has achieved remarkable milestones, demonstrating its effectiveness in providing direct financial assistance to farmers. As of July 2026, more than ₹4.47 lakh crore has been directly transferred into farmers' bank accounts through 23 instalments. The 23rd instalment alone, released in June 2026, benefited over 9.49 crore farmers, with a total of more than ₹18,984 crore disbursed. Furthermore, the scheme played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, disbursing over ₹1.71 lakh crore to support farmers during challenging times. Notably, women farmers have been significant beneficiaries, receiving over ₹1.06 lakh crore, accounting for nearly one-fourth of all recipients.

Independent evaluations, including one conducted by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog, confirm the scheme's positive impact. More than 92% of beneficiaries reported utilising the financial assistance for agricultural activities and investments. Additionally, approximately 85% of beneficiaries confirmed an improvement in their agricultural income and a notable reduction in their dependence on informal credit sources. The scheme has also been linked to significant agricultural growth between 2020-21 and 2025-26, with the area under cultivation increasing by about 9.65%, productivity rising by roughly 10.53%, and total foodgrain production seeing an impressive growth of approximately 21.18%. These statistics highlight the scheme's comprehensive support and the growing capacity of the agriculture sector.

Benefits for Farmers

The PM-KISAN scheme offers multifaceted benefits that directly contribute to the financial stability and operational efficiency of farmers:

  • Timely Investment: The financial assistance helps farmers make timely investments in essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilisers, irrigation, pesticides, and machinery.
  • Reduced Debt Burden: By providing direct income support, the scheme significantly reduces farmers' reliance on informal credit sources, protecting them from high-interest loans.
  • Enhanced Productivity and Income: Access to timely funds enables farmers to adopt modern agricultural techniques and better inputs, leading to improved productivity and higher agricultural income.
  • Strengthened Rural Economy: The scheme's direct cash transfers inject liquidity into rural economies, strengthening the financial stability of farming households and fostering overall rural development.

Eligibility and Implementation

The PM-KISAN scheme is designed to support landholding farmer families, with a clear definition of family encompassing husband, wife, and minor children. However, certain exclusion criteria apply to ensure the benefits reach the most deserving:

  • Institutional Landholders: All institutional landholders are excluded.
  • High Economic Status: Farmer families where one or more members hold or have held constitutional posts, serve as ministers (central or state), Members of Parliament, State Legislative Assemblies, State Legislative Councils, Mayors of Municipal Corporations, or Chairpersons of District Panchayats are not eligible.
  • Government Employees and Pensioners: All serving or retired officers and employees of Central/State Government Ministries, departments, and public sector enterprises, as well as regular employees of local bodies, are excluded (with the exception of Multi Tasking Staff/Class IV/Group D employees).
