Introduction to PM-KISAN
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme stands as a monumental initiative by the Indian government, designed to provide crucial income support to landholding farmer families across the nation. Launched on February 24, 2019, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, with retrospective effect from December 1, 2018, the scheme has since become a cornerstone of rural welfare. Its primary objective is to augment the income of eligible farmer families, enabling them to meet expenses related to agriculture and allied activities, as well as essential domestic needs, thereby reducing their dependence on informal credit sources.
A Pillar of Financial Support
Since its inception, the PM-KISAN scheme has disbursed an astounding figure of over ₹4.27 lakh crore to farmers, underscoring its significant role in fortifying the rural economy. This massive financial injection has been crucial in supplementing farmers' financial needs, ensuring they have access to capital for purchasing essential agricultural inputs. The scheme is entirely funded by the Central Government, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to farmer welfare.
Recent Disbursements and Upcoming Installments
The impact of PM-KISAN is evident in its consistent installment releases. The 22nd installment, for instance, was released on March 13, 2026, from Guwahati, Assam, transferring ₹18,640 crore to 9.32 crore eligible farmers through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Looking ahead, the 23rd installment of the PM-KISAN scheme is eagerly awaited by approximately 9.46 crore farmer families and is expected to be released between June and July 2026, adhering to the scheme's established payment cycle. While an official date has not yet been confirmed, beneficiaries are advised to ensure their e-KYC is complete and their Aadhaar is linked to their bank accounts to avoid any delays.
How PM-KISAN Works
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, eligible landholding farmer families receive a financial benefit of ₹6,000 per year. This amount is disbursed in three equal installments of ₹2,000 each, every four months. The payment cycles are clearly defined: April to July, August to November, and December to March. The funds are directly credited into the Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts of the beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode, ensuring transparency and eliminating intermediaries.
Eligibility and Exclusions
To benefit from the PM-KISAN scheme, a farmer family must meet specific criteria. A landholding farmer family is defined as a family comprising a husband, wife, and minor children who collectively own cultivable land as per the land records of the concerned State/UT. Other mandatory requirements include being an Indian citizen, having an Aadhaar card linked to an active bank account, and having completed e-KYC verification.
Who is Excluded?
While the scheme aims for broad coverage, certain categories of individuals belonging to higher economic status are excluded. These include:
- All institutional landholders.
- Former and present holders of constitutional posts.
- Former and present Ministers, State Ministers, Members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, or State Legislative Councils.
- Former and present Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of District Panchayats.

Impact and Success Stories
Multiple evaluation studies highlight the profound impact of the PM-KISAN scheme on farmers' income and the broader rural economy. A 2019 study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) found that PM-KISAN payments helped ease credit constraints, encouraged investment in agricultural inputs, and improved farmers' ability to take calculated risks in farming. Feedback collected through Kisan Call Centres indicates that over 93 percent of beneficiaries utilize the funds for agricultural purposes. Furthermore, an impact assessment by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog revealed that over 92 percent of beneficiary farmers used the assistance for essential inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Around 85 percent reported an increase in agricultural income, coupled with reduced dependence on informal credit during crop losses or emergencies.
The scheme has not only provided direct financial relief but has also empowered farmers, contributing to India's progress toward Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty reduction, food security, and institutional transparency. The widespread adoption of the scheme is also evident in states like West Bengal, which has embraced PM-Kisan, phasing out its own Krishak Bandhu scheme to align with the central government's initiative.
Digital Revolution in Welfare
To enhance accessibility and transparency, the government has introduced several digital features under the PM-KISAN scheme. A dedicated 'Farmers Corner' on the official PM-KISAN portal allows beneficiaries to easily check their status, eligibility, and installment details. Moreover, the introduction of a voice-based AI chatbot, Kisan e-Mitra, available in 11 languages, provides round-the-clock assistance and has successfully addressed over 95 lakh queries from more than 53 lakh farmers. The Face Authentication eKYC system has also been launched to assist farmers without Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers, further streamlining the verification process.
These digital advancements ensure that the benefits reach verified beneficiaries efficiently, making PM-KISAN one of the world's largest direct benefit transfer initiatives. Similar to how various welfare schemes are brought closer to citizens through initiatives like West Bengal's Jana Kalyan Shivirs, PM-KISAN leverages technology for wider reach.
The Road Ahead
The Union Budget 2026-27 has allocated a substantial ₹60,000 crore for the PM-KISAN scheme, reiterating the government's commitment to strengthening farmers' income security. This ongoing support is vital for sustaining agricultural growth and ensuring the well-being of the farming community, who are the backbone of the nation's food security.
